You know the saying, “April showers bring May flowers,” but do you know where it comes from? Not many people do. One of our discount partners, 1800Flowers, shares the origin story on its website, which we’ve summarized for you here.
What’s in a Saying? A Brief History
In almost all parts of the world — and certainly in all parts of the United States — it’s true that the rainy month of April is followed by the colorful blooms of May. This truth prompted Thomas Tusser, a poet whose work dates back to the 1150s, to write, “Sweet April showers do spring May Flowers.” While the saying we know and love so well today is a direct descendant of Tusser’s, a bit of digging reveals that Tusser may have gained inspiration from yet an earlier poet and not the annual concurrence as was originally thought.
At the end of the fourteenth century, in his famous “The Canterbury Tales,” poet Geoffrey Chaucer said something along the lines of the following:
“When in April the sweet showers fall
That pierce March’s drought to the root and all
And bathed every vein in liquor that has power
To generate therein and sire the flower.”
Of course, his words were much more whimsical, but the sentiment remains the same.
