Before we give you a sneak peak of what to expect this season, we thought first we would discuss the origins of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Black Friday is unique in that it has two origin stories. The first is a dark tale that has nothing to do with holiday shopping. The second more closely relates to the holiday as we know it today.

The story goes that back in the 1950s or 60s, the Philadelphia streets would flood with tourists and shoppers on the Friday between Thanksgiving and the Army-Navy football game. The police forces that ended up having to work that day dreaded the day, as it meant managing large, unruly crowds, traffic jams and increased shoplifting. Officers thus began to refer to the day as “Black Friday.”

Cyber Monday’s origin story is more straightforward. As a result of the flurry of online sales that occurred the Monday following Thanksgiving, the National Retail Federation thought the day could use a catchy name. Hence the birth of Cyber Monday in 2005.
